"Talented African Cameras" celebrates its 2nd anniversary this year. This selection of projects in development is an integral part of our Pavilion of African Cinemas' program and aims to promote and foster the emergence of our African talents. This year, "Talentueuses Caméras d'Afrique" invited 7 Directors whose projects are very promising. We welcome them to our pavilion to allow them, with their producers, to continue developing their project and connect with potential partners.

Short Synopsis
South Africa is in its early years of democracy and Nelson Mandela's presidency has just come to an end. Salma, a former activist, has just lost a seat in her local municipal elections and receives a notice from the bank informing her that her house will be repossessed in two weeks. A family member had cheated her out of a large sum of money and now she must seek justice and save her home. Only an old comrade is willing to help but even his generosity comes at a price.
Salma's journey of grief and memory explores the way in which our new democracy is haunted by
the shadow of a patriarchal system.

Note from the Director, Imram Hamdulay

I see this story as a reflection of how difficult democracy can be in its early stages and the way our liberation narrative is still dominated by men. South Africa is known as the rainbow nation but it sometimes feel as a country, we're not a rainbow nation, we're just a very traumatised family. Imran Hamdulay is a writer, director & producer.

He is an alumni of the Berlinale Talents programme and his short films have won multiple awards and played at numerous festivals around the world.

Coming from a family of activists, his films seek to preserve the memories ofhis forefathers where he explores themes around family & social justice in South Africa.

Khosie Dali is a producer based in Cape Town, South Africa. She is the founder of Miss K Productions which seeks provide emerging black creatives a home to hone their skills in a safe space and present their stories to a global audience. The company is now seeking to produce
and develop films exclusively by black filmmakers with special focus on unearthing female writers and directors.

David Horler is a South African producer based in Cape Town. He is an alumnus of the EAVE Producers Workshop and Biennale College Cinema alongside various other laboratories. Recently completed feature films as producer include Jenna Bass's Feminist Western FLATLAND (2019 Berlinale Panorama opening film) and Bass's supernatural dramedy HIGH FANTASY (2017 Toronto International Film Festival, 2018 Berlinale.

SANKARA (la fin d'un Homme Intègre)

Synopsis bref
Un jeune journaliste français arrive à Ouagadougou le 14 octobre 1987 au matin, le lendemain 15 octobre, il a rendez-vous avec Thomas Sankara le président du Burkina Faso, pour un entretien. Ce 15 octobre, à 16h, Thomas Sankara rejoint ses compagnons pour une réunion. Ils sont à peine installés qu'on les interpelle du dehors.

- Sortez ! Sortez, les mains en l'air !

- Restez ! Restez ici, c'est à moi qu'ils en veulent, dit-il à ses compagnons avant de quitter la réunion.

Il se montre sur le perron, où il est aussitôt abattu. À l'hôtel où séjourne le journaliste, on a entendu les coups de feu, la fête qui s'y préparait s'interrompt. On apprend la mort de Thomas Sankara et l'interdiction de sortir dans la rue.

Sankara n'est pas un biopic dans le sens propre du terme, mais une évocation de la vie de Thomas Sankara. La narration s'articule sur trois récits entrelacés :- Le déroulement de la journée du 15 octobre 1987 telle que l'a vécue Sankara, les scènes fictives qui se déroulent, simultanément, dans un grand hôtel où se séjourne un journaliste français venu pour l'interviewer, divers clients et employés représentant plusieurs sensibilités politiques. Les moments forts de la vie et de la carrière politique de Sankara, évoqués par les différents occupants de l'hôtel, en parallèle avec l'action seront traités, sous forme de reconstitution, en flash-back et/ou par des images d'archives.

Issaka Compaôré a fait des études de cinéma à Paris. Après avoir été l'assistant de Pierre Yaméogo et son directeur de production au sein de Dunia Production. Il est aujourd'hui gérant de la société de production Sahel Films Production (SAFIPRO). Comme réalisateur, il a à son actif des fictions et des documentaires Il a produit et réalisé la série documentaire Regards d'Afrique.



Léandre-Alain Baker, acteur, auteur et réalisateur congolais, il a réalisé plusieurs films fictions et documentaires (Diogène à Brazzaville, Tchicaya, Les fiancés d'Imilchil, Yolande ou les blessures du silence, Paris la métisse, Ramata etc…), romancier et dramaturge, il a également collaboré à l'écriture de plusieurs scénarios.

SWEET ANNOYANCE

Short Synopsis
The film follows Sara, a perpetual loner who is insecure in a big city that is rapidly changing and leaves little room for her to belong. Against the backdrop of Addis Ababa under construction, and the chaos that represents, Sara meets Hailu, a man who plants a seed of self-awareness she can't shake. As she struggles to reconcile what he sparks in her she discovers that the freedom she thought she had was an illusion of her own making. As the truth shatters everything around her - she has to break free and ultimately finds comfort in the most unlikely place.

Note from the Director, Hiwot Adamsu Getaneh
My understanding is that freedom is a mental state, a way of being with yourself rather than the external world since even the most privileged can be trapped with their way of thinking. That's what Sara learns in her journey, she learns the ultimate privilege is knowing that you're already free.

Hiwot Adamsu Getaneh was born in Addis Ababa and is a graduate of Blue Nile Film Academy. Her first short film, New Eyes (2015) was selected in Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals. She then directed her second short film A Fool God (2019) which was selected for TIFF and Berlinale. She is an alumnus of TIFF Talent Lab, Locarno Summer Academy, Berlinale Talents, Durban Talents and Realness Residency.

Mehret Mandefro, Mehret is an award-winning producer and writer whose credits include the Sundance and Berlinale Audience Award winning feature film "Difret" (2014) and the New York Times' Critic's Pick feature documentary "Little White Lie" (2014). She recently Executive Produced the feature film "Sweetness in the Belly" (2019) which had its World Premiere at 2019 Toronto Film Festival and was released by Gravitas Ventures.

THE GENERAL'S AMNESTY

Short Synopsis
The General's Amnesty is a drama set in KAMENTE, a detention center, in dictator Idi Amin Dada's 1970's Uganda. Luck runs out for ORACH (27), a black market magendo businessman, and he finds himself detained as an enemy of the state at the terrifying Kamente Prison in Northern Uganda. News reaches the prison that in a week, General Idi Amin Dada, the President of Uganda, will grant amnesty to four hundred prisoners across the country. Pressure builds in Kamente as prisoners make moves and deals that they can end up on the Amnesty List.

Note from the Director, Ssenkumba Adnan
The focus of my inspiration for directing this biopic historical story is related to my humanitarian work of preventing and creating awareness about human trafficking in Uganda. When I read through the treatment of The General's Amnesty I could clearly relate with most of the Human trafficking cases that I have documented in the last five years of directing

documentaries about Human Trafficking. The characters in this story like Orach to me represent most of the torture and suffering the human trafficking victims go through yet at the same time still holding onto hope that things will get better. Also, even though I was not yet born in this period of time that the film is set, my parents lived through this era. He was an official camera person for then President Amin and even though he did not get to capture all these things, he did get to witness more than he was allowed to. He too became a fugitive as a result because he knew too much. Growing up, there were times he told us bits and pieces of tales that happened during his time. Being a part of this project, I feel like I am telling my father's story in a way.

SSENKUMBA Adnan's dream for directing film was inspired by Mira Nair, whileworking as a camera PA on ‘A Fork, A Spoon and A Knight' (Mira Nair, 2014). Adnan fluidly moves between Film directing and location sound mixing. After three years of training, school, workshop, and personal efforts Adnan made a stunning entry into the Ugandan film industry with ‘Black Hall', a Maisha film lab short film (2010) where he worked as sound man. Originally trained as an actor at the Department of performing Arts and film at Makerere University Kampala, Uganda (2009-2012), Adnan made his debut in directing with the web series entitled ‘Watch your back' (2014). Adnan's abilities as director are manifested in ‘Unseen Dreams' documentary (2019).

Achiro Patricia Olwoch, Producer, hails from Gulu, in Northern Uganda and she is an Award-winning film maker. Achiro is a very fast learner and making film is her passion. She has a good sense of imagination and even though she bases her films on real life situations, she adds a twist of imagination to each and every story. She makes film because she would like to make a difference in her community through the different stories that she has to tell.

Synopsis bref
Dans la chaîne des montagnes du Congo-Nil, au nord-ouest du Rwanda, Mbanda, 57 ans, mène sa vie dans le confort de sa solitude, fasciné par les étoiles et accaparé par des expérimentations électroniques. Son quotidien est perturbé par le retour de Rosalie, son amour déçu de jeunesse, et l'arrivée de Mutabaruka, un jeune congolais qu'il recueille. Au fil des saisons, Mbanda est confronté à son passé et à une histoire qui semble se répéter.

Je trouve que le cinéma n'a pas assez rendu justice à la subtilité et la poésie de la vie quotidienne des Rwandais. Je souhaite capturer l'essence des sentiments et émotions que j'y perçois, et proposer un voyage à travers les espoirs, peurs et rêves de gens ordinaires auxquels, je l'espère, tout le monde pourra s'identifier.

Samuel Ishimwe est né et a grandi à Kigali, au Rwanda. Sa carrière débute au Rwanda où il tourne des courts métrages avec des amis. En 2017, il est diplômé de la HEAD. Son film de fin d'études IMFURA est présenté en 2018 à la Berlinale où il remporte l'Ours d'argent du court métrage.



Thomas Hakim Après avoir travaillé en tant que directeur de production et producteur pour plusieurs sociétés, Thomas Hakim fonde en 2018 Petit Chaos avec Julien Graff. Les courts-métrages qu'il a produits ont été sélectionnés à IFFR, Indie Lisboa, Dok Leipzig, Clermont-Ferrand…

Synopsis bref
En s'enfuyant d'un braquage dans lequel il était impliqué, Vincent trouve refuge dans une vieille maison dont le garage est ouvert. La police s'est éloignée, mais Vincent ne peut pas partir car le sac contenant le butin a été caché par Pierre, le propriétaire de la maison atteint de la maladie d'Alzheimer.

A travers ce film, je souhaite parler des jeunes de banlieue issues de l'immigration en dehors des clichés habituels. Et ce, au travers d'une histoire d'amitié hors du commun entre deux Frances qui s'ignorent et que tout oppose. Les personnages apprendront que c'est avec l'autre qu'on peut surmonter les drames et aller plus loin. C'est la France des banlieues qui rencontre la bourgeoisie rurale.


Choukri Rouha est un réalisateur Tunisien qui se partage entre la Tunisie et la France. Il a étudié au cours Florent. Après une carrière d'acteur, il se consacre à̀ l'écriture. Il a obtenu plusieurs prix dont le prix Orange Beaumarchais. Il a gagné différents prix en tant que Producteur dont le Grand Prix d'Oujda pour "Sacrée Cœur", et il a produit et réalisé "Fast love" qui a obtenu de nombreuses sélections dans des festivals internationaux notamment aux JCC, dans la section panorama du Cinéma Tunisien. Ne m'oublie pas est son premier long métrage de fiction.
