Contemporary visual artist Waison Mupedza has died. He died at Parirenyatwa Hospital on Sunday after being admitted there for two weeks reportedly due to some stomach problems. He was 42 and leaves behind his wife Modester and three young children.

The versatile Mupedza's biggest claim to fame was illustrating the late Celia Winter-Irvine's book "Sooty the Cat at Tengenenge".

Besides contemporary art paintings he also did calligraphy, designing, sculpting, as well as making post and greeting cards depicting African activities and their environment. Mupedza showcased his great works at various local and international forums in countries such as Australia, Netherlands and South Africa. He also held solo exhibitions. His grief-stricken family yesterday told The Herald that they had lost a pillar of strength.
