WHO ARE WE?

The Festival de Cannes now welcomes over 30,000 accreditees spanning the entire spectrum of the film industry, as well as some 4000 international journalists, making it the biggest and most widely acclaimed film festival in the world.

The privileged venue of both film discoveries and encounters, the Festival de Cannes reflects the dual nature of the cinema: art and industry. For if the Festival evokes first and foremost the surprise of being selecting and the hope of winning a prize, it is equally the privileged rendezvous of all motion-picture industry professionals for whom the Marché du Film was first created at the Festival in 1959.

The Festival is equally supportive of artistic and cinematic development throughout the world. Twenty years after the Caméra d'Or, a prize awarded to Best First film, came the Cinéfondation - a programme that made it possible for young filmmakers, at various stages of their creative careers, to step up behind the camera and gain international professional recognition.

The role of the Festival de Cannes has thus grown rich over the course of the years, to the rhythm of the evolution of cinema itself: selecting and promoting films and artists, welcoming professionals, developing new artistic initiatives... ultimately, serving cinema in all its infinite dimensions.

FESTIVAL ORGANISATION

DISCOVERING AND SPOTLIGHTING FILMS: THE OFFICIAL SELECTION
The Official Selection consists of about twenty features in Competition, about twenty films in the selection Un Certain Regard, films Out of Competition or in Special screenings, a programme of shorts in Competition, the school films of the Cinéfondation selection and Cannes Classics.

THE COMPETITION
Symbolised the world over by the ceremony of the Red Steps, the Competition represents both the most visible part of the Festival and the heart of the Official Selection. It welcomes the most highly recognised international cinema directors, many of whom it has often discovered.

The Jury determines the prize winners, and awards, during the Festival's Closing Ceremony: the Golden Palme, the Grand Prix, Prizes for Best Actor and Best Actress, Prize for Best Director, Prize for Best Script and the Jury Prize. It is the Jury of the Cinéfondation and Shorts which awards the Golden Palme for Best Short.

UN CERTAIN REGARD
Un Certain Regard welcomes each and every year about twenty films of all genres and styles, "original and different" works, which thus attain international recognition.

The "Un Certain Regard" Prize, sponsored by the Gan Foundation, is awarded by the Un Certain Regard Jury during its closing evening, on the eve of the Official Award Ceremony.

THE CINEFONDATION SELECTION
Comprising fifteen to twenty short and medium-length film school works, chosen from among more than 1,000 student films from all over the world, this selection reflects both the diversity of young cinematic creation and the trends of tomorrow's film.

Three films receive awards handed out by the Jury of the Cinéfondation and Shorts at a ceremony held on the Friday preceding the close of the Festival.

CANNES CLASSICS
Since 2004, the Festival has offered through Cannes Classics a highly diversified programme of world heritage films, with new or restored prints - tributes to foreign film industries and documentaries on cinema.

IN SUPPORT OF CREATION
THE CAMERA D'OR
Created in 1978 to contribute to the recognition of young filmmakers, the Camera d'Or prize is awarded to Best First film presented either in the Official Selection (Competition, Out of Competition and Un Certain Regard), or in the parallel sections (Directors' Fortnight and International Critics' Week). The Camera d'Or prize is handed out during the Closing Ceremony of the Festival by the president of this Jury.

THE ATELIER DU FESTIVAL
The Atelier, a new programme piloted by the Cinéfondation, selects about twenty international feature film projects, whose directors and producers are invited to Cannes. Throughout the Festival, the Atelier organises individual meetings with professionals to lead to the completion of already-acquired financing and assist directors in quickly stepping up to the making of their films.

The Cinéfondation accompanies the rise of a new generation of filmmakers by intervening at three complementary levels:
- The Cinéfondation Selection (film school works presented in the Official Selection),
- The Festival Residence (welcoming each and every year in Paris twelve young directors to help them finalise their projects for a first or second fictional feature film),
- The Atelier du Festival, created in 2005

DEVELOPING SERVICES FOR PROFESSIONALS
THE MARCHÉ DU FILM
The Marché du Film has become the largest film market in the world. In 2006 there were more than 10,000 participants from 91 countries and around 900 films were screened - the majority being world premieres. The Marché du Film is likewise the partner of all professionals, actively contributing to the global motion picture industry, particularly independent cinema. It offers a wide range of services and information to facilitate business and help industry professionals develop their activities all year round.

THE PRODUCERS NETWORK
The Producers Network offers a host of original initiatives aimed at producers, ever more numerous each year at the Festival. It enables them to develop those projects they wish to bring to the screen and master the ever more complex, global environment of world cinema. About 400 seasoned producers took part in the activities of the 2006 Producers Network.

THE SHORT FILM CORNER
The Short Film Corner is dedicated to the promotion the short film. Created in 2004 to respond to the demand of directors and producers alike, it is a platform to both host and showcase their films. It also represents a significant stepping stone for moving up from shorts to features.

WELCOMING FOREIGN FILM CINEMATOGRAPHY
THE VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL
The Festival de Cannes offers, thanks to the Village International, the possibility to all motion-picture-producing countries to present and promote their film industry, culture and institutions, as well as develop exchanges. In 2006, the Village International welcomed more than 30 countries to its two sites: Riviera and Pantiero.

TOUS LES CINEMAS DU MONDE
Inaugurated in 2005, Tous les Cinémas du Monde was set up as an initiative for countries with a historically low cinema output to showcase their works. It offers the chance for each country, everyday, to present a range of films reflecting its cultural identity and unique expression.

OPENING UP TO THE PUBLIC
THE CINÉMA DE LA PLAGE
The Cinéma de la plage is an outdoor Festival theatre which screens the films of the Official Selection, Out of Competition, and Cannes Classics. These screenings, open to the general public, are preceded each evening by a programme dedicated to film music.

OUR TEAM

The French Association of the International Film Festival groups together the Festival de Cannes, the Cinéfondation and the Marché du Film. The permanent team of the Festival de Cannes totals about thirty people which gradually grows throughout the year to reach around 850 during the event, and around 300 for the Marché du Film.
