An international movement



The Alliance Française was founded in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists such as Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne with the principal objective of promoting the teaching of French language around the world.



It has since developed into a global network of 1016 Alliances Françaises in 135 countries fostering friendship between peoples through the promotion of the French language and Arts and cultural exchange.

IN KENYA


Alliance Française de Nairobi



The Alliance Française de Nairobi was founded in 1949. It was situated along Tom Mboya Street, known as Victoria Street. Over the last sixty years, the Alliance Française de Nairobi has developed into one of the largest on the African continent with some 4000 students learning the French language every year, and a leading cultural space.



In order to meet the growing demand for French language classes in Nairobi, an annex in Buruburu was created in 2006.



Alliance Française de Mombasa



The Alliance Française de Mombasa in operation since 1975, offers regular and special French language courses for both individuals and companies, translation and interpretation services (English/French) and a series of engaging cultural activities.



Branches in Eldoret and Kisumu



With growing demand for learning the French language, associated Centres were opened in Eldoret in 2002 and in Kisumu in 2009.



Objectives



• promote the French language
• develop an appreciation and understanding of French and Francophone cultures
• promote artistic and cultural diversity



Distinctive Characteristics



The institution of Alliance Française is non-political and non-religious and is a not-for-profit entity.



It is created at the request of the citizens of the country where it exists and is governed by local legislation and managed by a local Board of Trustees made of Francophone and Francophile personalities.
