Nouvelles Editions de Films (NEF) was created in March 1956 in order to produce Robert Bresson's film, "A Man Escaped". It was then used to finance Louis Malle's first feature film, "Elevator to the Gallows", in 1957.

Louis Malle then produced or coproduced all of his French films through NEF, as well as the first feature films of Alain Cavalier, Volker Schlöndorff and Maurice Ronet.

End of 1995, his son, Manuel Cuotemoc Malle, took over the company, producing several short and feature films while handling Louis Malle's catalogue distributed by Pyramide Films.
