Selam is a music organisation based in Stockholm and Addis Ababa. We arrange and promote festivals, concerts, club nights and forums, presenting a mosaic of global sounds.

The projects and activities are administrated by the Selam team in Stockholm and national coordinators in East Africa. The aim is to develop capacity within the music industry through workshops and training courses for musicians, producers, sound and lighting technicians, managers, organizers, music journalists and others. We work with both private schools and public universities, institutions, associations, groups and artists, concert halls, embassies, government agencies and private companies. Selam's projects in East Africa are currently supported by Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) and we also cooperate with the Swedish Institute on several projects. Selam, Selam Ethiopia, is also identified as an international cultural NGO (Non Government Organization) in Ethiopia since 2005. Right now a permanent office and music studio is under conctruction in Addis Ababa.

Some of the most current projects taking place right now are various workshops for producers and artists. Together with Swedish musician and producer Andreas Unge and local partners, we organize software workshops in East Africa, most recently in April, in Uganda. Musician and educator, Klas Jervfors went to Uganda and Ethiopia to conduct a couple of days of workshops targeted at producers, artists, and associations of copyright issues and other representatives of the authorities. The aim was to provide participants with new insights and inspire thoughts about how the music sector in Uganda and Ethiopia can be developed.

The urban project Hip Hop Canvas is going on between April-August, also in Uganda, in cooperation with Platinum Entertainment. Hip Hop Canvas aims to create a platform for hip hop artists in Uganda and take participants through a "checklist" process of auditions and talent development from live performance to album release, through a series of workshops and practical hands-on activities.

In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Zema Mahlet is a ongoing project, with the objective to transcribe and translate the complete contents of a series of radio programs produced between 2008-2009, from Amharic to English. The programs include discussions by professionals on specific artists and subjects related to the music industry generally, such as copyright. The project aims at the general lack of information and channels of information concerning the historical aspect of Ethiopian artists, as well as the contemporary music scene in general.

The Kyambogo Music Sector Survey will involve a number of students at Kyambogo University Music Department, Uganda. Students will work with Jackson Oboth from J & J Media Consultants to collect and edit content on the Ugandan music scene for publication in spring 2010.

Last but not least, we plan for Selam Music Festival at then end of the year, in Addis Ababa, featuring concerts, debates, seminars, network meetings and workshops. Last year's festival offered artists from Sweden like Jaqee & The Kookoonuts and Million Styles aswell as Kenyan Sauti Sol!
