He became known to the general public with Etienne Chatiliez's film La Vie est un grand fleuve tranquille (Life is a Long Tranquil River) in 1987. He has staged Bertolt Brecht and The Marquis de Sade. He has worked on screen and on television for Patrice Leconte, Agnieszka Holland, François Ozon and Amos Gitaï, and regularly for Aki Kaurismaki, notably in Le Havre. This year he will be appearing in Valéria Bruni-Tedeschi's new film Un château en Italie.
