Cartoonist Godfrey Mwampembwa, a.k.a GADO was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on August 6, 1969. After finishing his A- levels, he joined Ardhi Institute to study architecture. One year later in 1992, GADO left to become Editorial cartoonist and illustrator with Nation Media Group in Nairobi, Kenya, the largest newspaper group in East and Central Africa. Before joining Nation, GADO freelanced with Daily News, Business Times and the Express all of Tanzania.

A regular contributor to New African (UK) and Courier International (France), Business Day and Sunday Tribune (SA). GADO is the most Syndicated Political/Editorial cartoonist in the East and Central Africa. His works have also been published in Le Monde (France), The Guardian of London and Japan Times among others.

Apart from illustrating and contributing to many books and publications GADO has done 3 books ABUNUWASI (1996), a short comic story book, "DEMOCRAZY" and "THE END OF AN ERROR…" which are a collection of his editorial cartoons over the years.

An ardent lover of animation and film since childhood, GADO studied animation at Fabrica, a Communication Research Center in Treviso, Italy (1996-1997). In the year 2000, he realized his dream of becoming a professional animator/Filmmaker when he joined Vancouver Film School in Canada, where he studied classical animation and filmmaking, graduating in 2001.

Gado is a 2007 Prince Claus Laureate. He is also a winner of Kenya National Human Rights Commission Award in Journalism in 2005 and 2007. In 1999 he was named Kenya Cartoonist of the Year. He has exhibited his works in Tanzania, Kenya, France, Norway, Finland and Italy. A painter in oil and water colours, GADO is a member of Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), the Association of East African cartoonists (KATUNI), Cartoonists and Writers Syndicate (C&W) and a Board Member of Cartoonist Rights Network (CRN).
He speaks fluent Swahili and English, and modest French.

GADO continues to do editorial cartoons for the Daily and Sunday Nation and The East African.
