Hannes Verhoustraete (Belgium, 1986) is a filmmaker, teacher and researcher at KASK / School of Arts Ghent. His first feature film Un pays plus beau qu'avant (2019) ties the everyday economic urgency of a Congolese businessman in Brussels to the political and humanitarian urgency that animates the diaspora faced with the situation in Congo today and the echoes of colonial history. Broken View (2023), a poetic essay film on the colonial gaze and the magic lantern, deals with these same echoes from a different perspective. Both films are part of a research project on the essay form as a historiographic mode. He also writes for the Belgian cinephile platform Sabzian.be.
