NDEPENDENT recording artist Kerry Damudamu will also be considered for the top artist of the year award at the Procera Music's Fiji Music Awards night which will be held in Suva in August.

Procera's manager Mahid Murad confirmed this and says this will put Damudamu in the running for the top gong against the other two top artists in Fiji right now, Semi Kaitani of the Savu ni Delai Lomai and Jiosefa Vetaukula of the Malumu ni Tobu kei Naivaukura.

The three will contend for the top artist award in the vude category but the music's popularity has only soared in recent years surpassing sigidrigi, gospel and virtually killing off the local reggae genre.

"Kerry does not record with us but we will also consider him because we got his top song with us as we did the remix for it and he will also be in the running for the top artist award at the awards night," Murad said.

The Nagigi lad drew national acclaim following the release of his single Cava na Leqa which is more popularly known as Rosi ni Qamea in the second half of last year and which immediately set the local music chart on fire.

Damudamu's Cava na Leqa duelled with Semi Kaitani's Savu ni Delai Lomai's song Qoroi na kemu roka for the number one spots at the Viti FM and Bula FM radio stations Top 100 lists of 2012.

His inclusion now will make the battle for the top artist award at the upcoming Fiji Music Awards a three-way battle, with Vetaukula and his Malumu ni Tobu completing the top contenders' list.

"The top artist award will be decided by sales record as well as the amount of air time these artists got with the radio stations and we will of course check with Viti and Bula FM on this," Murad said.

A total of 30 awards will be up for grabs at the awards night which will be divided in categories for the five music genres of vude, sigidrigi, Gospel for iTaukei and English music while musicians of Indian descent will contest in the bhajan, kirtan, lokgeet, filmy, qawali and gospel genres.
