Nyota Ndogo (Swahili for 'Tiny Star') is a singer from the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa. She grew up in a musical family, with her father, Abdala Atibu, being a guitarist for a local band in Mombasa. Her brother, Juma Tutu, is an accomplished singer and saxophone player, and one of the top musicians in Kenya.
Nyota has released three albums: 'Chereko', 'Nimetoka Mbali' and 'Mpenzi.' She won Kisima Award for best Taarab singer in 2003 and Best female singer in 2005, among other awards. Her song 'Watu na Viatu' was nominated for the best East African song at the 2007 Tanzania Music Awards.
In 2013, Nyota Ndogo dove deep into her Taarab roots by collaborating with taarab groups Lelele Africa, Nairobi Melodies and international musicians, Kim Jesus from Denmark, Yohan Ramon from Cuba and Vivianne Arnoux from France during two creative workshops based on her music.
In 2014, Nyota Ndogo joined other Kenyan musicians at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival held in Washington DC.
