Richard Ackoon was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad. At an early age he showed an interest in art. His uncle, Patrick Chu Foon, a noted Trinidadian painter and sculptor, nurtured his artistic abilities and encouraged him to become involved in the fine arts.

With his first series of paintings in 1999, he focused on commercial print media and explored the range of hidden narratives transmitted through images in advertising. The result was an investigation into the manipulation, construction and presentation of the modern male image in popular culture.

Color has always been a vital element in Richard's creative process and he credits his love of vibrant color to the artistic phenomenon that is Trinidad Carnival.

"As a boy, I drew cartoon characters and imagined land and seascapes. I was exposed to the world of art through my uncle's amazing talent and inspiration. He continues to inspire me.
