He was born in Jimma in 1970. He developed an interest in the cinema when he was very young and his first activity in the field was as a photographer. He obtained his first success with the film Kezkaka Wolafen, focused on AIDS which was thus brought to the attention of the general public. In 2004, he made Fikir Siferd, the first Ethiopian film to be co-produced outside the country and which has been shown an at many international festivals.
