The National Theatre was established by the National Theatre Law, PNDCL 259, 1992 and was officially inaugurated on December 30, 1992.
The Theatre was born out of a technical co-operation Agreement signed on September 18, 1985 in Beijing between the Governments of the Republic of Ghana and the People's Republic of China.
The latter Government provided the funding for the construction of the National Theatre building, which was completed on December 20, 1992.

To become the focal point of the Performing Arts in the ECOWAS Sub-region
MISSION STATEMENT
To develop and promote the performing arts in Ghana through cost effective production of classical and contemporary live-stage and televised performances, which project positive national values and the African personality.
