DETAILS

The workshop training and arts journalism collaboration will be conducted with experienced media professionals.

The goal is to upgrade standards of African arts reporting in all media, with depth and analysis through critical feature writing and production.

The activities will be geared to creative media production in a real working environment against the backdrop of an exciting arts festival - it will be intensive, packed, and demanding!

The 7-day course takes place in Zanzibar with some exciting media partners against the backdrop of the eighth Tanzania SAUTI ZA BUSARA (Sound of Wisdom) FESTIVAL (check out the website www.busaramusic.org for details) which runs from February 9-13. The festival has grown to become one of the most exciting music festivals in Africa, featuring some of the great names in African music, as well as many emerging stars from East Africa.

Zanzibar presents a vivid African experience and context to arts reporting: a deeply-rooted traditional African coastal society with a singular sense of identity in culture, language and value-systems in the midst stunning island scenery and the historic town of Zanzibar, and a centuries-old history linking Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania to Arabic, Asian and Indian Ocean peoples and cultures.

Like much Africa, it is also a society of transition, contradiction, modern global influence and social challenges - rich ground for the discerning arts journalist!

COURSE CONTENT

Details, including preparatory work, will be provided to successful applicants.

The course will seek to select a balanced team comprising print and film/TV journalists, with one photo-journalist in the mix.

The team of participants will produce filmed material, feature articles and photo-essays. It will be a ‘total immersion' experience, looking to present the highest standards of reporting, analysis and interpretation of African arts in a festival context.
