THE BERLINALE TALENT CAMPUS

Since 2003, the Berlin International Film Festival has encouraged young filmmakers from all over the world and all professional fields to apply to the Berlinale Talent Campus. Over 350 of them are invited to Berlin each year to reflect on their ideas about film in lectures, ateliers and panel discussions, and to work on their projects in specialized hands-on workshops.

Tapping into the unique atmosphere of a great film festival, the Campus takes place simultaneously with the Berlinale. It brings together aspiring talents and experienced film professionals for a six-day program that touches on essential issues of filmmaking such as story development, cinematographic styles, production models and new markets. Former experts include Park Chan-wook, Frances McDormand, Stephen Frears, Dennis Hopper, Jia Zhangke, Walter Murch, Anthony Minghella, Charlotte Rampling, Walter Salles, Ridley Scott, Raoul Peck, Tom Tykwer, Wim Wenders and many more.

From the very beginning the Campus has been mainly funded by a public-private partnership: the MEDIA training programme of the European Union, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Skillset & the UK Film Council and Volkswagen. We are very grateful that these partners support us continuously with their creative ideas and their generous funding.

Each year, the Campus has a special focus which is of relevance to all stages of filmmaking and to all fields of work of those young film professionals who attend the Campus. In 2008, this focus will be "Screening Emotions - Cinema's Finest Asset".

The Campus' programme reflects and dedicates it's events to the five crucial stages of filmmaking:

PHILOSOPHY
PREPRODUCTION
PRODUCTION
POST-PRODUCTION
PROMOTION

As a major platform for professional networking, the Campus offers events where attendees from all fields of work gather. The atelier programmes address more specialized topics for the various film professions; the events are nonetheless open for all participants. The hands-on training programmes brings the participants together to work actively with one another. In small teams they produce tangible results during the Campus week.

The Campus community presents the profiles of all invited participants and samples of their work. It also serves to highlight the Campus programme. To date, 2500 young filmmakers from all five continents stand alongside with 500 experts and prominent figures in sharing their enthusiasm for film at the Berlinale Talent Campus. The online 'Community' space of the recently relaunched Campus website will promote and support professional networking and cooperation between former Campus participants for their future careers.

The Campus concept has been widely acclaimed by participants, experts and the industry as a worldwide unique summit of up-and-coming filmmakers. Efforts are increasing to support countries with that lack a strong film infrastructure, and young talents from these regions are especially encouraged to apply. A similar motivation is behind the exportation of the Campus idea to other countries: film festivals in Sarajevo, Cape Town, New Delhi and Buenos Aires have organized their own Talent Campus initiatives to support young filmmaking communities on a more local level.
