AFRIKAMERA PRESENTS: RE_IMAGING AFRICA 2013

From Ouagadougou to Antananarivo a vibrant festival scene has developed in recent years. Burkinan FESPACO or Tunisian JCC have already established themselves as fixed meeting points for the global film scene. Newer film festivals, such as Madagascan short film festival RENCONTRES DU FILM COURT or the COMOROS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (CIFF) are moving in the same direction.

Festivals have established themselves as display windows for current African cinema and as stepping stones for young African film makers. At the same time more and more film schools open, aimed at offering young, African film makers the possibility of developing and implementing their own visions for African cinema. In this context strategic partnerships between film festivals and film schools gain growing importance.

For this reason toucouleur e.V. has initiated a project running over three years: RE_IMAGING AFRICA: Issues, Perspectives and Utopias of Contemporary African Cinemas.

The film-, word- and seminar-events taking place in the period from November 2013 to March 2015 will focus on the facilitation of exchange relations between selected film festivals and film schools in Germany and in the African countries. A central building block in the project is the exchange program "Moving Images, Moving Experiences" between African film schools and German film academies, scheduled to begin in 2014. Venues for RE_IMAGING AFRICA will be Berlin and Kassel (Dokfilmfest) as well as the partner festivals in the African countries.

Kick-off will take place in Kino Arsenal where four film programs, curated bilaterally with the partners in Africa, will present themes that move the "Post Independence Generation" of today's young, African film makers, containing several Germany premieres.

The theme of emigration and identity runs like a red thread through African film. The film program, curated as a cooperation between AFRIKAMERA - AKTUELLES KINO AUS AFRIKA and FESPACO, presents, alongside classics of the genre, such as GITO THE UNGRATEFUL (16.11.), newer movies on the subject, like ESPOIR VOYAGE (16.11.). Here the Burkinean director Michel K. Zongo embarks on a personal search for traces of his older brother Joanny, who tried his luck in the Ivory Coast, and vanished there.
Films taking on the theme complex "Africa in Transition" will be presented in cooperation with the Tunisian festival JOURNEES CINEMATOGRAPHIQUES DE CARTHAGE (JCC) - domiciled in the Northern African country where the socalled "Arabellion" broke out. Whereas C'EST EUX LES CHIENS (13.11.) looks at the changes in Morocco, the documentary ATALAKU (17.11.) leads to the centre of the campaign of the presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1992.

The program composed by Laza (RENCONTRES DU FILM COURT (RFC)) and Mohamed Saïd Oumar (COMOROS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (CIFF)) focuses on the film scene on the East African islands, a region that represents mostly uncharted territory in the world of cinema. Among others will the current African Island Shorts (15.11.) be screened as Germany premieres.

The program "Africa for the Future", also curated by Laza, presents a selection of innovative short movies from Tunisia, Gabon, South Africa and Zambia, distinguished through a film language beyond social realistic sobriety.

InJean-Pierre Bekolo one of the greatest visionairies of current African cinema will visit. Broadening the concept of Ousmane Sembène, using the cinema as tool for developing and changing the conciousness and thereby the present-day, Bekolo sees cinema as "imaginative space" for the development of ideas. To round off RE_IMAGING AFRICA he presents his latest film, LE PRESIDENT, which for fear of repression has only been screened once in Africa.

Beside the film programs Saturday (16.11.) will be dedicated to the full-day symposium "The Art of Collaboration". Invited are people from the cultural sector, politics, media and civil society, who deal with the developments on the African continent and support them: creative people, journalists and NGO members, as well as representatives from the participating film schools and film festivals. The discussion will touch on new models and routes for the partnership cooperation between people engaged in film production in Germany and African countries, as well as how the film medium can be instrumental in generating new commitment for German-African cooperations. The symposium takes place in cooperation with the COMENGA program of Stiftung Partnerschaft mit Afrika e.V. and with financial support from Bundesministerium für Entwicklung und wirschaftliche Zusammenarbeit and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung.

Finally it will be time for a party: RE_IMAGING AFRICA and INTERFILM invite to a joint FESTIVALPARTY Saturday (16.11.) in Grünen Salon (Volksbühne) in Berlin-Mitte.
