Sandy Cioffi originally set out to make a film about the opening of a library in the Niger Delta. It never got made. On the day the library was due to open, a group of protesting students got in front of her camera and shouted about natural resources, Chevron and the Nigerian government. Sandy realised that the real issue of the area was not the library. It was oil. She then followed the activities of the students, who formed the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, getting close to four of the activists in particular. This is a fascinating and urgent story about oil politics, mass media agendas and the role of independent journalists in exposing the truth. It is also about the history of non-violent protest in the area and of how deaf governments and oil companies have forced this to transition into a more urgent insurgency as lives and the environment are increasingly put at risk for profit.
