Three months before the January 25th uprising, film director Amal Ramsis began shooting her first scenes in the streets of Cairo on her own. Like this she had to hide from the eyes of the police, often sheltering in homes of the friends and acquaintances that we see in the film discussing acts and thoughts that are typically forbidden in Egypt. The film is a testimony of the situation before the January 25th revolution. It explores the very meaning of the word "forbidden", which punctuates many forms of Egyptian daily life even as it remains incomplete and contested. In the end, the revolution comes on the last day of editing this film to provide answers to many of the questions that the film raises.

Drie maanden voor de opstand van 25 januari, begon regisseuse Amal Ramsis op eigen houtje haar eerste scènes in de straten van Caïro te draaien. Ze moest zich verbergen voor de politie, en zocht onderdak bij vrienden of kennissen die we in de film leren kennen terwijl ze gedachten uiten die in het algemeen verboden zijn in Egypte. De film is een bewijs van de situatie vóór de revolutie van 25 januari. De film staat stil bij de betekenis van het woord "verboden", een woord dat het dagelijkse leven in Egypte domineert, al blijft het vaak ongedefinieerd en omstreden. Uiteindelijk breekt de revolutie uit op de laatste montagedag van de film en komen de antwoorden op de vele vragen die de film oproept.

"Forbidden" macht die Bedeutung des Wortes "verboten" und seine Auslegungen im politischen und sozialen Alltag Ägyptens erfahrbar. Ägypter aller sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Schichten bezeugen ihre Erfahrungen mit Einschränkungen und Verboten. Präzise gibt der Film so die allgemeine Stimmung wieder, die im Land vor dem Ausbruch der Revolution herrschte, und mündet schließlich in eine Dokumentation der aufgestauten Wut, die zum Aufstand vom 25. Januar 2011 führte, als die Regisseurin bereits an der Endfertigung des Films arbeitete.
