Across Africa, attitudes have recently hardened towards gay people, encouraged largely by US-based Christian evangelical groups. In countries such as Burundi, Sudan, Nigeria and Uganda, homosexuality is a criminal offence; in some countries it is even punishable by death. 2 MEN AND A WEDDING focuses on Steven and Tiwonge, two gay lovers whose public engagement ceremony in Blantyre, Malawi at the end of 2009 resulted in them being sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. This is a story that unpacks the implications of being gay in Africa and two men's fight for their human rights and dignity.
