Bevor James Brown der Godfather of Soul wurde, hatte er einen langen und beschwerlichen Weg hinter sich zu bringen. Als Kind wuchs er in ärmlichen Verhältnissen und in einer zerrütteten Familie auf, nachdem seine Mutter die Familie verlassen hatte. Im Alter von fünf nahm ihn schließlich seine Tante Honey (Octavia Spencer) unter ihre Fittiche, die nur das Beste für ihren kleinen Neffen wollte und immer darauf bedacht war, dass ihm für seine Zukunft alle Möglichkeiten offen standen.
