What if there were more farmers on a museum ground than visitors inside the exhibition hall? What if a museum concept overtaken from Europe contradicted the local traditions? And what if a local community reclaimed the same piece of land on which the material evidence of the whole nation shall be represented? LE TERRAIN DU PEUPLE portraits the National Museum of Burkina from different angles and evokes questions about the right place and adequate strategies to conserve the cultural heritage of the country. Thereby, the film entangles poetic, performative and documentary aspects.

Was, wenn auf einem afrikanischen Museumsgelände mehr Bäuerinnen bei der Arbeit anzutreffen sind als Besucher in der Ausstellung? Wenn ein übernommenes westliches Museumskonzept in Widerspruch mit den lokalen Traditionen gerät? Und auch noch eine dörfliche Gemeinde Anspruch auf dasselbe Stück Land erhebt, auf dem die Nation repräsentiert werden soll? Le terrain du peuple porträtiert das Nationalmuseum Burkina Fasos aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln und stellt die Frage nach einer angemessenen Art und Weise für den Erhalt des kulturellen Erbes in dem westafrikanischen Land. Dabei greifen performative und dokumentarische Anteile ineinander.
