Sharaf, an Egyptian in his twenties, is idle in a shopping street in downtown Cairo. In front of a movie theater, a stranger offers him a seat and invites him, after the movie, to continue the evening at his place. Charaf accepts but, when his host makes advances, he hits him with a bottle of whiskey and accidentally kills him. Sentenced to a long prison term, he meets several remarkable characters in prison: a Coptic pharmacist framed for his probity, a hermetic warden, corrupt guards, zealous fanatics, a luminary, innocents too poor to be honest, and a few inveterate thugs.

NOTE BY THE PRODUCER (Les Contes Modernes, France)
Sharaf, based on the novel by Sonallah Ibrahim, is the story of a modern Candide in a dystopian Arab world. Sharaf kills a man in self-defense and is thrown into a prison that reflects the microcosm of the complex situation of Arab societies living under dictatorship and poverty and dependent on an unjust global economic system.
