In 1989, fifteen years after independence, Mozambique was a country ruined by civil war. Even sugar, once produced in large quantities, has become rare and precious.
From Nampula to Cuamba, the train is the only hope for hundreds of civilians willing to risk everything, including their lives, to exchange a few bags of salt for Mozambican sugar Malawi.
The trip goes five miles an hour on sabotaged line sections. Obstacles and constant disasters rendered vulnerable all travelers. The Convoy of Salt and Sugar is a story of faith, hope, and unexpected love.

Mozambique is in the midst of civil war. A single train connects Nampula to Malawi. No civilians are allowed and yet hundreds risk their lives through 700km of sabotaged tracks. Salomão and Taiar are two soldiers who don't get along. Rosa is a young nurse on her way to her first job and soon becomes an object of desire. All her close friend, Mariamu, hopes to trade as much salt for sugar. Amongst bullets and laughter, life goes on and sto¬ries unfold. The train advances under attack, slowly and persistently to the next stop.
