In 1994, for three months, some Rwandans massacred their neighbours. 25 years after the genocide, perpetrators and survivors are learning to live together again. Despite the crimes committed, they have decided to move forward on the path of forgiveness, to find peace and build a new society.

In 1994, nearly 800,000 Rwandans were killed in just three months among the Tutsi minority. Twenty-five years after the genocide, perpetrators and survivors are learning to live together again.

In this small country where families cross paths daily, killers and victims must learn to coexist.

But can'political forgiveness', encouraged by the government, become'human forgiveness'? Through 20 testimonies of genocidaires and their victims, Joel Karekezi paints the portrait of a bruised but appeased country. Punctuated by the intervention of historian Kalisa Rugano,'Rwanda: Portraits of Forgiveness' explains the genesis of the conflict and looks back at the reconciliation process.

Assumpta Mugiraneza, a Rwandan psychologist, examines the reasons for the conflict and provides a sociological analysis of the need for redemption. How can we learn from our mistakes and pass on a message of peace to future generations who did not live through the genocide?
genocide?

How to avoid repeating the same mistakes? These are the questions this film will try to answer.

In a country that was once segmented, the rhetoric of forgiveness allows for an apprenticeship in democracy and the emergence of new solidarities.

Today, Rwandans are moving forward on the path of forgiveness, to find peace and build a new society.

More than a story made of testimonies,'Rwanda: Portraits of Forgiveness' is also an incredible photographic work in collaboration with the South African photographer Pieter Hugo and the Croatian artist Lana Mesic.
