Under the magnitude of the volcano, the traditional society is changing. The old aristocraty, owner of the land as well as the local trade, which supports the political power, is beginning to fall apart. It arises therefore a class of mulattos whose economic power lays mainly on trade. Slowly, a new identity is born, a combination of old and new values where African and Portuguese cultures become integrated ; a new identity also marked by an intense sensuality and wich is strongly atteched to their origin.
