Boudiaf, the ephemeral president of Algeria from January to June 1992, remains for a great many Algerians a symbol of political integrity. Founder of the national Liberation front (FLN), the father of the homeland, his opposition to Ben Bella forced him to exile in 1963. In december 1991, just after the unprecedented rout of the FLN in the legislative elections called by president Chadli, it was Boudiaf whowas invited to take charge by FLN leaderships and the general's of the army, to counter the rise of the islamist-integrist movement. On june 29, 1992, he was assassinated. The future of Algeria was played out in the few months beetween the end of 1991 and the summer of 1992.
