How did the magical land, the paradise of the Côte d'Azur and Provence become one of the battlegrounds of the Occupation years? The poet decided to leave the realms of Surrealism for underground action. He made the irrevocable decision that his writings would remain a secret "so long as nothing occurs to change the unspeakable situation in which we find ourselves." The author of Feuillets d'Hypnos took up arms. He joined the maquis as other go into the Church. Char became "Captain Alexandre", one of the local heads of the interior resistance. He was in charge of the landing and parachuting of agents and stores into occupied France. These underground years were both a tragic yet magical period for him. He would never forget the fury and the mystery - like a lost treasure.
