Meisie is a young girl who lives on the edge of the Kalahari, in the remote hills of Riemvaasmaak. She lives alone with her father, looking after his goats, and although she is of school-going age her father forbids her to attend school. Meisie is, for her part, unconditionally obedient, despite her natural affi nity for mathematics and her yearning to express herself out of the confi nes of her father's world.
When a young teacher from Cape Town arrives in the isolated community, her kindness and resourcefulness quickly gain the trust of the local community. One day she discovers Meisie unravelling a complicated equation on the blackboard and discovers the truth about the young girl. Determined to help the gifted girl unleash her abilities, she travels the long distance to Meisie's home every day to give her private lessons, all the while avoiding her angry father.
Meisie is more than the story of one girl's struggle to reach her potential. It is the story of Southern Africa, and of the vital importance that education must play in this country's journey to maturity. It is also another point in the ascendancy of Darrell Roodt, one of South Africa's most prolifi c fi lmmakers.
