The struggle to embrace the heritage of 1976 and advance on its platform, does not always attain fulfi lment. This short documentary explores the self destructive consumerist nature of post-apartheid youth in the cities, and focuses on the psychology behind the decisions they make in relation to themselves and the community they fi nd themselves in. It exposes the sense of anxiety in the inner cities, and the desperation of their pursuit of the South African dream.
Durban is a booming economy undergoing a cosmopolitan revolution, and the young African is increasingly met with the pressure to sustain and live up to new social expectations which, unmet, often devolve into stark materialism and hedonism. Inside the inner city there is a seductive matrix of illusion ready to open the way to teen prostitution, drug abuse and alcoholism. In Sins of the Inner City we see and hear the voices of young Africans coming to terms with sometimes distressing realities.
