During the 40s and 50s, during the French colonization of Tunisia, a woman, Esther, from a Jewish Italian family converts to Islam, changes her name to Hedia, and weds a man who is the right hand of Salah Ben Youssef, a nationalist leader who later opposed Habib Bourguiba. She tells her passionate story at the heart of historic events. She also relates her conflict with her son, Mohamed David, who is involved in a continuous search for his Jewish origins.
