African American music is a cultural revolution. Its history is political. Its beats have moved the world.
BLACK MUSIC recounts the African American community's perpetual struggle for freedom, the ways in which this struggle was declared, amplified and celebrated through music, and the ways in which it acquired a universal dimension.
The film will show how, for the African American population, political struggle and musical creativity continuously nourished each other.
It will also show how, through its music, the history, conditions and aspirations of this community of some twenty million people with little power or wealth managed to touch masses around the world and to unleash one of the most profound social upheavals of the 20th century.
BLACK MUSIC will be at once a history of the African American community and a history of popular music over the last eighty years.
