Bila, a young peasant, decides to go working in Ivory Coast. At the same time, his parents task him with bringing Pogbi to her fiancé, a man she has never seen. Pogbi, in love with Rasmane who is treated like a pariah because he is from the blacksmith caste, runs away. The humorous back-and-forth between both young people in town ends with the father refusing this union. Bila gives up and comes back to the village with the fiancé who has become poor and mad.
