In the aftermath of the genocide, against all odds, the women of Rwanda stand up and face up. Paradoxically, the genocide strengthened these survivors. Legal minors until very recently, humiliated and dehumanized, they work with determination to rebuild Rwanda. Even in trades that were once inaccessible to them, they often do better than men. Through their ethics and their dynamism, they have imposed changes at all levels of social and political life, even within the national Parliament where they occupy 48% of the seats, a unique proportion in the world. Through their generosity, they prove to the world that poverty is not inevitable. In their regained dignity, they stand out as true mothers of courage. At the heart of these portraits, the common thread is the story of Athanasie Mukarwego. During the genocide, following the assassination of her husband, she was the victim of gang rapes for three months. Her four children were sequestered in the next room. Despite everything, Athanasie overcame her tragedy. She's a heroine. In her resilience, she was able to get up, for herself, for her children and for other women.
