Marigo the musician dreams with his instrument - a congoma - confiscated by his landlady because he never pays the rent. He gets hold of a lottery ticket and decides to put it in a safe place while he waits for the draw: he glues it to the back of his door. The night of the draw, fortune blinds Marigo, he is the proud owner of the winning ticket. He already sees himself as a millionaire, with a thousand congomas, an orchestra and a private plane… He even has visions of the charismatic Aminata Fall, symbol of capitalism in Africa. But there is small problem; the ticket is glued to the door… Le Franc is the first part of Mambety's unfinished trilogy Tales of Little People, which includes The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun. "Le Franc" is the first in a planned, but unfinished, trilogy in which Mambety gives tribute to the poor, whom he describes as "the only truly consistent, unaffected people in the world, for whom every morning brings the same essential question: how to preserve what is essential to themselves." He uses the French government's devastating 50% devaluation of the West African franc in 1994 as the basis for a trenchant yet whimsical parable of the life of millions in Africa today. The hero of the tale is Marigo, a down-on-his-luck musician whose formidable landlady has confiscated his congoma (a kind of guitar) as payment for back rent. Played with slapstick gusto by Madiéye Dieye, Marigo is a kind of everyman, a West African equivalent of Charlie Chaplin's "little tramp." In a desperate attempt to pay his rent and reclaim his congoma, he buys a lottery ticket. When he wins, he finds that redeeming the ticket is no easy feat... a film by Djibril DIOP Mambéty starring Madièye DIÈYE, Aminata FALL, Demba BÂ Senegal/Switzerland/France 1994 | 44m | DigiBeta | Wolof with English subtitles | Rating 15 | Short Original Title: Le franc German Title: Das Los French Title: Le franc Other Titles: Le franc Country: Senegal, Switzerland, France Runtime: 44 Min. Senegal, 1994, 45 min., dvd, woolof sottotitoli in italiano VINCITORE DEL PREMIO COME MIGLIOR CORTOMETRAGGIO ALLE JOURNEÉS CINEMATOGRAPHIQUE DE CARTAGHE (TUNISIA), NEL 1994.
