A documentary that takes a close look at and helps us understand the turbulent history of Haiti and its heroes made by one of the country's sons: the artist Maksens Denis.
"The Tree of Freedom" tells the story of his native country from the time the island was populated by its native population, via the arrival of the slaves, until the Independence war that saw Haiti becoming a free state in 1804. Haiti owes its freedom to heroes like Caonabo and Toussaint Louverture who fought against the racism and oppression of Spanish and French forces.

Co-director Maksens Denis is a renowned Haitian artist based in Dakar.
