The research since 2000 of Laurent MEDEA focus on the study of the interaction of creolisation and domination with the process of cultural identity formation in Réunion and now in Indian Ocean World. He tried to understand the social formation of a cultural and ethnic identity. He is continuing to demonstrate and debate on the social and historical contexts the domination of France through its agents in Réunion, and the recent resistance to this domination by the local people. For him, Creole language is the key cultural element in resisting this French domination.

Since 2005 he is working also on the sociology of violence and deviancy and the relationship between delinquency and identity in Réunion Island.
