The Singaporean director Sherman Ong made the film MEMORIES OF A BURNING TREE (KUMBUKUMBU ZA MTI UUNGUAO, 2009) in Tanzania and shot it in Swahili.

He was born in Malaysia in 1971. He graduated cum laude from the National University of Singapore. He has worked as a director and photographer since 2002 and organized workshops and lessons on cinema and photography. In 2003, he was selected by the Talent Campus of the Berlinale. His works have been presented at museums and festivals all over the world, including the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam and the Institute of Contemporary Arts of London. His most recent feature film, Flooding in the Time of Drought was commissioned by the Biennale of Singapore in 2008.

Nasce nel 1971 in Malesia. Si laurea con lode all'Università Nazionale di Singapore. A partire dal 2002 lavora come regista e fotografo e organizza workshop e lezioni di cinema e fotografia. Nel 2003 viene selezionato dal Talent Campus della Berlinale. I suoi lavori sono stati presentati in musei e festival di tutto il mondo, tra cui il Rotterdam Film Festival, l'International Documentary Festival di Amsterdam e l'Institute of Contemporary Arts di Londra. Il suo ultimo lungometraggio Flooding in the Time of Drought è stato commissionato dalla Biennale di Singapore nel 2008.
