Boubakar Gakou was born in 1981 in Niono, in the north-east of Mali. He first moved to Bamako and then to Abidjan to continue studying. There he falls in love with cinema and literature.
In 1998, after a few years of self-taught education, he writes his firsts scripts. In 2001, he goes back to his native village and, in that same year, he starts working in the cinema where he explore different roles (actor, assistant director, etc..). He begins many collaborations with several major directors.
From 2006 he made several short films and some feature films as a director and assistant director. His documentaries are mostly about history and rural world, issues that he feels particularly close to. For several years now, he has been defending the cause of the peasants of the "Office du Niger" in Mali.
