Georges SENGA is a photographer and director.
He is known for the short documentary KASONGO (IM)MATERIAL (2021, co-director) directed alongside with Noémie ARAZI.

Born in 1983, in Lubumbashi (Democratic Republic of Congo / DR Congo).
Lives and works in Lubumbashi.

Georges Senga Assani is a photographer who was discovered during the first edition of the Picha Biennale de Lubumbashi in 2008, by Marie-Françoise Plissart and Sammy Baloji.
He joined the master class degree organized by the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg/South Africa, Lubumbashi (2012), and Lagos/Nigeria (2013).
The third and fourth series of photographs titled a life after death and Kadogos was presented in 2014 at the Kampala Art Biennale and 2013 at Rencontres Picha Biennale de Lubumbashi. Earlier, in 2009, his project impressed was presented at the second Lubumbashi Biennale with Simon Njami.
He received a research grant by PRO HELVELTIA in 2014 for his photo project TRANSIT. In 2015 he was a fellow at WIELS Contemporary art centre, Forest/Belgium, as well as part of the project African Odyssey at the arts center BRASS. That same year, he presented his work at the Bamako Biennale, where he graduated from the price Leo the African RAM.

He develops his photographic work around history and the stories revealed in "memory, identity and heritage", shedding light on our actions and the present. Three of his projects thus explore memory, in search of the resonances that men, their facts and objects leave behind, and the resilience of memory in his country, Congo. Georges Senga's work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions : Lubumbashi Biennale in 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2019, Asbl Dialogues in 2013, Bamako Biennale in 2011, 2015 and 2017, Addis Fotofest in 2014 and 2018, Kampala Biennale in 2014, Cape Town Art Fair in 2018, Sesci_video Brazil in 2019, Contour Biennale in 2019, Kigali PhotoFest in 2019, Fondation A in 2019, Wiels art centre in 2019, Galerie Imane Farès in 2019, Cargo in Context in 2019, FOMU in 2019, Jean Cocteau cultural centre in 2020, United Nations, United States in 2020.

From January 2014 to February 2020, Georges Senga carried out numerous residencies in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

He has won the Thamie Mnyele Award (Netherlands, 2019), DemoCrasee, Bamako Biennale (Mali 2017), CAP PRIZE - International Prize for Contemporary African Photography of the IAF Basel (Switzerland, 2017), SADC Research Residency Prohelveltia (South Africa, 2017), Leon the African RAM, Bamako Biennale (Mali, 2015), SADC Research Residency Prohelveltia (South Africa, 2014), Special mention, PHOTOAFRICA (Spain, 2009).

His project at Villa Medici [2020-2021] is entitled Comment un petit chasseur noir Païen devient prêtre Catholique (How a small Black pagan hunter becomes a Catholic priest), a project born after meeting in 2017 the daughter of a Catholic priest, who by his function, shouldn't have had children. During this gathering, the priest's daughter reveals a bag containing several undated slides, belonging to the father who died in 1989. Georges Senga's project retraces the journey of this Catholic priest named Bonaventure Salumu, from his village to his stay in Europe.

Tre dei suoi progetti esplorano così la memoria, alla ricerca delle risonanze che gli uomini, i loro fatti e i loro oggetti lasciano dietro di sé, e la resilienza della memoria nel suo paese, il Congo. I lavori di Georges Senga sono stati presentati in mostre personali e collettive: Biennale di Lubumbashi nel 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015 e 2019, Asbl Dialogues nel 2013, Biennale di Bamako nel 2011, 2015 e 2017, Addis Fotofest nel 2014 e 2018, Biennale di Kampala nel 2014, Cap Town Art Fair nel 2018, Sesci_video Brazil nel 2019, Contour Biennale nel 2019, Kigali PhotoFest nel 2019, Fondation A nel 2019, Wiels centre d'art nel 2019, Galerie Imane Farès nel 2019, Cargo in Context nel 2019, FOMU nel 2019, Centro culturale Jean Cocteau nel 2020, Nazioni Unite, Stati Uniti nel 2020.

Ha ricevuto i Premi Thamie Mnyele (Paesi Bassi, 2019), DemoCrasee, Biennale di Bamako (Mali 2017), CAP PRIZE - Premio Internazionale di Fotografia Africana Contemporanea dall'IAF di Basilea (Svizzera, 2017), SADC Research Residency Prohelveltia (Sudafrica, 2017), Leon the African RAM, Biennale di Bamako (Mali, 2015), SADC Research Residency Prohelveltia (Sudafrica, 2014), menzione Speciale, PHOTOAFRICA (Spagna, 2009).

Il progetto di residenza a Villa Medici [2020-2021] si intitola Comment un petit chasseur noir Païen devient prêtre Catholique (Come un piccolo cacciatore Pagano nero diviene un prete Cattolico), un progetto nato dopo il suo incontro nel 2017 con la figlia di un prete cattolico che, in quanto tale, non avrebbe dovuto avere figli. Durante questo incontro, la figlia del sacerdote mostra una borsa contenente numerose diapositive non datate, appartenenti al padre deceduto nel 1989. Il progetto di Georges Senga ripercorre il viaggio di questo prete cattolico, Bonaventure Salumu, dal suo villaggio al suo soggiorno in Europa.
