Born in 1964 in the village of Koutjenebougou, Sikasso in the southern part of Mali, he was graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure of Bamako, a high school teacher training college, as English major. In early 90s he created with friends a small scale business in urban waste management and was well involved in developing grassroots organizations working in urban sanitation in Bamako. Berthé is chairman of a non governmental organization, (ASSONUM), working for the development of digital solidarity in Mali. He is nowadays a local civil servant and is very interested in literature.
