Born in Dakar, Meissa learnt at a very young age the art of writing and of traditional religious chants from his native country that initiated him into the love of transmitting the history of his native Senegal to its people. This new record is a musical journey into the African diaspora poetry, where Meissa and his vocal guest artists give a heart-felt homage to the afro american poets like a generation who witnessed slavery such as Phillis Wheatley (USA), George Moses Horton (USA) and Luìs Gama (Brazil), the first black american poet to gain national recognition, Paul Laurence Dunbar, the charismatic panafricanist leader, Marcus Garvey, two stars of the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes and Claude Mckay, bard of Cuban negritude,Nicolas Guillén, and Jacques Roumain of Haiti. Recorded in Dakar, the album is a fusion of Senegalese folk and traditional mandingo music, driven by a deep afrobeat groove from the Nigerian Drum Master Tony Allen. Meissa sings in Wolof accompagnied of women powerful backing vocals for a magical experience into the heart of West Africa. Back To Africa is also a collaboration between Meissa and Afro American artists such as Mike Ladd, Allonymous, Jayhem for a musical quest between traditional tassou, the origins of rap and the modern vocal expressions as spoken word, slam, and rap.
