The French publishing house L'Arche was established by Robert Voisin in 1949. Its first publications aimed to introduce the public to subjects previously available only to specialists, such as psychoanalysis, philosophy and aesthetics, but L'Arche's list soon included theatre, both through its contribution to the early development of "Théâtre populaire" - movement for "opening" the French theatre to a "broader" public and to enhance its quality - and through its agreement with Bertolt Brecht in 1954 to publish the author's work in French.
