On Thursday 21 March, the Movies that Matter Festival will kick off with the screening of The Act of Killing in the presence of director Joshua Oppenheimer. In his ‘documentary of imagination', as Oppenheimer labels the film himself, he challenges unrepentant death squad leaders to dramatise their role in genocide. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of Indonesian mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit.
