In West Africa, 30 million people are affected by river blindness, that is onchocerciasis. The population of these regions has fled for fear of contamination and the resulting disability, leaving behind ghost villages in areas however very fertile. In 1974, the WHO launched the Onchocerciasis Control Program (OCP) to help this region in its fight against the disease.
