In 1975, "THE WIZ", A re-imagination of the Classic Wizard of Oz tale, opened on Broadway to critical acclaim. It featuring an all-African American cast with music that referenced heavily from that culture: jazz, rhythm and blues, Motown and gospel. The Original Broadway production was directed by one of our Nationals, cultural icon and world renowned artist , the late Geoffrey Holder and went on to win 7 Tony awards, with Geoffrey collecting for both Best Direction and Costume design.
