South Africa: forty-six million inhabitants, of whom over six million have AIDS. And infection increases every day. The film, following Elizabeth and Bafana in their daily work, documents this tragedy from an unusual point of view, that of the undertakers who work constantly to cope with the hundreds of funerals held every week in the monumental Avalon Cemetery of Soweto, which gets bigger and bigger.

In South Africa, about 350,000 die of AIDS every year. Undertakers are doing a brisk trade and cemeteries are bursting at the seams. Around 800 burials are held at Avalon, the oldest and largest of Soweto's cemeteries, every Saturday, which is the only free day available to working relatives. The number of people suffering from HIV in South Africa is still rising. We meet the manager of the Kay Vee Funeral Home, and business is booming. On an average Saturday he oversees around 80 funerals. With the help of reliable contacts, he secured a lucrative contract with the government to bury the countless anonymous AIDS fatalities. He collects the bodies from hospitals and police stations, earning approximately 50 euros per head. Not bad for a funeral that in fact involves little else than digging and filling a hole in the ground. What does this explosion of disease and death mean to the young generation of South Africans? Zulu girls who live in Soweto and witness the crippling effects of AIDS every day say they have no plans for the future. With a hazardous life-style and lack of health education, the prospect of a plot for them at Avalon may not be very away.

Zuid-Afrika telt ca. 46 miljoen inwoners. Aangenomen wordt dat op dit moment 6.3 miljoen Zuid-Afrikanen HIV-besmet zijn, in 2003 bedroeg dat aantal nog 5.3 miljoen.
Jaarlijks sterven ca. 350.000 Zuid-Afrikanen aan de gevolgen van Aids. Hierdoor floreert de begrafenisindustrie en barsten de begraafplaatsen uit hun voegen.

Verreweg de meeste begrafenissen vinden op zaterdag plaats omdat de familie het zich niet kan veroorloven op een werkdag vrijaf te nemen. Alleen al op Avalon, de oudste en grootste begraafplaats van Soweto, gaan er iedere zaterdag zo'n 800 doden de grond in. Duizenden mensen trekken dan door de poort en er spelen zich steevast chaotische taferelen af. Insiders zeggen dat Avalon eind 2006 vol zal zijn.

Alleen in Soweto zijn er al meer dan honderd begrafenisondernemers. Met twee van hen maken we in de film nader kennis:

Elizabeth Molefe is eigenares van Rebafeti Funeral Parlour, een klein bedrijf dat slechts vier begrafenissen per week afhandelt.

Bafana Sihlali is manager van Kay Vee Funeral Home, zijn zaak loopt als een trein. Op een normale zaterdag verzorgt hij zo'n 80 uitvaarten. Met hulp van goede relaties sloot Sihali bovendien een lucratief contract met de overheid af om de talrijke naamloze Aids-doden te begraven. Deze paupers zijn veelal verstoten vanwege het Aids stigma of werden door familieleden niet geclaimd omdat die de begrafenis niet kunnen betalen. De lijken worden door Sihlali opgehaald bij de mortuaria van ziekenhuizen en politiebureaus. Hij verdient 395 Rand (ca. 50 Euro) per overledene. Niet slecht voor een begrafenis die in feite niet meer behelst dan het graven en vullen van een gat in de grond.

De Zoeloe-meisjes Minky (16) en Peaches (17) belichamen in de film de jonge generatie van Soweto. Het lijkt onvermijdelijk dat zij gezien hun riskante leefwijze en de gebrekkige voorlichting op termijn aanleiding zullen zijn tot weer een begrafenis op Avalon.
