EPA is organising in collaboration with the Africa 2009 Programme and the Cultural Heritage Directorate of Benin, the 10th Regional Course on the conservation and management of immovable cultural heritage in sub-Saharan Africa. Launched in 1998, the main objective of the Africa 2009 Programme is to improve national competencies in sub-Saharan Africa in the conservation and management of immovable cultural heritage.
This course brings together twenty African professionals in charge of the management of sites, architects, archaeologists, urban planners and specialists in the natural and social sciences. They come from 17 African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Chad, Togo and Comoros.
This 10th issue of the course aims at creating for participants a melting pot of reflections on the most important problems that exist in the area of planning and management of the conservation of immovable cultural heritage.
The course is divided into two parts:
- national policies and practices
- planning and management of sites.
The main part of the course will be dedicated to planning and management of sites with a practical exercise on the lakeside village of Aguégués. This will provide tools and notions which will enable professionals to gain the necessary competencies for the conservation and management of immovable cultural heritage in Africa.
This 10th course is the last which the Africa 2009 Programme will give for the Francophone countries. The programme is supported by the Swedish International Development Agency - SIDA, through the Cultural Heritage Directorate of Sweden, the World Heritage Centre - WHC, the Norwegian, Finnish and Italian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and ICCROM.
