The first planning meeting of Artwatch Africa project ran from 11-12 March 2014 to 12 in Johannesburg with the Swedish Human Rights Foundation, Mimeta, the Goethe Institute and Arterial Network. This was an opportunity to discuss approaches to freedom of creative expression in Africa and the training modules, which will be held in five regions of the continent.
Among the topics discussed were culture, artistic freedom and the limits of this freedom. Case studies were examined on the African system of human rights and cases of repression faced by artists. A first Train the Trainer workshop will be held in June in Tanzania to educate cultural actors on human rights issues and on creative freedom of expression, too often suppressed and poorly defended in Africa.
20 participants will be selected for this first step of Artwatch Africa, which aims to be at the forefront of defending creative and artistic freedom of expression in Africa. The training will be giving by the Swedish Human Rights Foundation with some high level cultural actors.
