This year's edition of Jibilika dance festival preliminaries are set to start this weekend at the Charles Austin Theatre in Masvingo before coming to Harare, Gweru and Mutare in the following weeks.

The finals of this year's edition will be held in Bulawayo and this is going to be the first time that the finals are held outside Harare.

One of the directors of the festival Plot Mhako said all is set for the preliminaries that are going to be held in the country's 10 provinces before the finals.

"This year the festival is going to be bigger and better since in previous years, preliminaries have been held in about only eight provinces. This year all the country's 10 provinces will select a single group to represent them at the nationals.

"The preliminaries in all the provinces will run from May to July, actual dates and venues will be announced within the next three weeks," he said.

He added that this year the festival will be running under the theme "Freestyle", meaning this will allow dancers to freely express themselves.

"We are running under the theme 'Freestyle', this means that the festival will allow young people to freely express themselves through dance, celebrating uniqueness whilst embracing our cultural diversity and will display high standards of choreography and professionalism as a way of making dance entertaining, engaging and economically empowering," he said.

He added that they were going to have a series of workshops that are going to be conducted with the provincial qualifiers receiving assistance from professionals as a way of enhancing their skills and performances.

"There are going to be prizes for the winners and they will be announced upon completion of the provincial finals," he said.

Jibilika is Zimbabwe's premier annual youth dance festival. It celebrates both urban and cultural dances and runs in competition format.

It is run by the Jibilika Dance Trust that was founded in 2007 and has remained an annual event.

This year's grand finale is set for the August 22 in Bulawayo at the Amphitheatre.

It is credited for exposing and promoting a lot of dancers and groups locally and beyond the borders.
